Thierry Daniel Henry (we didn't know his middle name was Daniel either) was without doubt one of the most graceful, balletic footballers of his or any generation.
He glided past opponents with elegant fluidity. He could pass the ball into the net - or flick it up and smash it in from 30 yards. He was strong and delicate and unplayable and intelligent. In fact, he was magni-fucking-fique.
Monaco
Henry's footballing apprenticeship took place under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger at Monaco. He was signed in 1990 as a prodigious 13-year-old and went on to make his debut at Stade Louis II four years later. Then operating as a winger, he was named French Young Footballer of the Year in 1996 and, along with close friend and team-mate David Trezeguet, was instrumental in leading the club to the Champions League semi-finals in 1997/98. Adidas manufactured Monaco's kits during Henry's time in the principality - and they were nearly as stylish as the club's bright young superstar.
Juventus
In January 1999, Juventus paid £10.5 million to take the Frenchman to Turin. But he endured a miserable spell in Serie A, registering just three goals in 16 games - some of which came playing at wing back. Despite Juve's Kappa kit being one of their finest, Henry never looked quite right in the Old Lady's famous black and white stripes.

Arsenal
Redemption would be found in North London after Wenger, now in charge at Highbury, paid £11m to bring Henry to the Premier League. After a rocky start (he failed to score in his first eight games), he established himself as the club's superstar talisman, most notably in 2003/04 during the Gunners' Invincibles season, scoring 39 goals in all competitions and being named for the second year running as the PFA Players' Player of the Year. During his eight years in England, he wore a host of cracking jerseys - but perhaps the blackcurrant 2006 Highbury farewell shirt was the finest.

Barcelona
In Catalonia, Henry, Samuel Eto'o and Leo Messi combined to forge one of the all-time great La Liga strikeforces. In 2008/09, the trio scored 100 goals between them, as the club won the league, cup and Champions League.

New York Red Bulls
Four years in the MLS followed after New York Red Bulls took Henry to the US. He may have been in the autumn of his career but the Frenchman was as relentless as ever, scoring 51 times in 122 games.
